Learning maori games
At the bottom of this page is a link with a game to try. The photos on this page are from this freebie. When teaching how to play a barrier game, choose a partner and play the game while the rest of the class observes. For a tuakana-teina approach you can have pairs on each side of the barrier. Note: Young children may find it easier to sit beside each other with the barrier between them rather than sitting opposite. This can avoid lateral problems, particularly when the barrier is removed and children are checking their work.
I often number the starting place and direction for younger learners. You could have just a few numbers for younger learners. One example of set up is one player placing items cards or pictures on a grid or boxes. This is also good for drawing instructions.
My children love kapa haka and doing their mihi at school they are right into it. Their school teaches a lot of it which is great. I have even brought them a pipi ma doll for Christmas each to learn more of the language. I love this! What a great resource. We have been also using a app this year called Kupu? It lets you photograph something and then you can see possibly what the Maori word is for that thing. We have had lots of fun trying to photograph everything!
Awesome, my 5 year old daughter has better pronunciation that I do haha. Her father and her are both Maori and we need to delve a bit into their ancestry. Our kids do a little bit at school on Maori words but they probably did more at Playcentre as you have to incorporate words into learning stories for the children. This is great as it helps you pick up sentence structures in a natural way. Starting in Te Reo Maori podcast on Spotify : There are a few episodes that look good on here around pronunciation, vocabulary and basic grammar points. Everyday Maori on Spotify : This is an actively updating podcast so it looks like there is more to come! This podcast starts off with the basics, and then looks like it gets into more advanced grammar as it goes on. Te Whanake podcasts: these podcasts are free but they are mainly following along and practising exercises from the Te Whanake textbook linked above.
There are hundreds of episodes of these so would be a great way to keep up your learning if you are a visual learner.
